Most of us who go to animal shelters prefer adopting dogs that are younger and more manageable. Besides, younger dogs are far more energetic and playful than senior dogs, which is basically one reason we adopt dogs. Most of us want a dog to accompany us whenever we go for a run and a dog we can play with at the park for hours.
Unfortunately, this is also the reason why many rescue dogs living in shelters are left out. Older rescue dogs don’t get the attention they need to get adopted. Whenever people come to see the dogs, they’re often attracted to the adorable puppies instead of the older dogs. Senior dogs that don’t get adopted are euthanized or spend the rest of their lives in the shelter without ever feeling what it means to be a part of a family.
Animal shelter staff and volunteers for the Asheville Humane Society were surprised one day when a woman named Leslie Sacks walked in, asking for the oldest dog they have. It was so unexpected that the shelter staff were shocked and couldn’t believe what they heard from Leslie. It was a great surprise for the animal shelter staff and volunteers because they definitely did have a senior dog that desperately needed a home and a loving family.
It turns out that Leslie already had experience taking care of senior dogs. Over the years, Leslie has given a loving forever home to about 50 elderly rescue dogs. Leslie came to understand that old dogs still have so much love to offer, and they can be a great companion for anyone. Whenever Leslie hears about a senior dog spending the rest of its life in a shelter, she’s always heartbroken.
Although it’s expected that the dogs that Leslie adopts won’t live for a long time, Leslie still gets emotional whenever a senior rescue dog she adopts passes away. However, Leslie always keeps on adopting old dogs and give them the best life she can provide. Here’s a heartwarming video about Leslie’s story about why she adopts senior dogs.
