When we think of police dogs, we often think of German shepherd or a Belgian Malinois dogs that are tough as nails. Although this is true back in the day, recently, there’s a new kind of police dog being acquired by police departments all over the country – these are emotional support dogs or therapy dogs.
It’s not common fare yet, but it’s starting to gain popularity. Instead of fighting bad guys, locating contraband, or searching for missing people, these pups’ purpose is to relieve people of anxiety. When dealing with police matters, people tend to get anxious, especially those who are the victims of a crime.
But having a therapy dog around makes them feel at ease. According to studies, witnesses and victims alike are also able to recall events better when there is a therapy dog around. This greatly helps police officers whenever they are conducting their investigation of a crime.
It doesn’t take much for a pooch to become a therapy dog. They only need to complete a couple of courses, and all they have to do on the job is to love the people around them. Basically, they are being asked to be themselves – and that’s exactly what K9 Brody did during his induction ceremony.
The police department of Bristol, Rhode Island, is one of the most recent recipients of a police therapy dog. The officers, along with the local community, were very excited about Brody joining the force. But unfortunately, Brody did not share that enthusiasm.
During his induction ceremony, Brody decided to take a nap. The hilarious ceremony was caught on camera, and they couldn’t do anything about it because it was a live Facebook broadcast. Despite Brody’s action, or lack thereof, the chief and his officers are eager to see Brody make his rounds in Bristol. Besides, he’s just being himself, and that is one of the qualifications to become a therapy dog.
