Dogs are known to be sensitive to extreme temperatures. It is the reason why it is dangerous for them to be left alone inside closed vehicles that can heat up to 120 degrees. The temperature of such a degree can cause heat stroke or, worse, death.
When a concerned citizen reported an incident of a dog being left alone inside a car, the Sarasota Police Officers immediately responded. They treated it as an emergency, knowing that the dog might die from the extreme heat.
Sergeant Louis Buck led the rescue team from Sarasota Police Department. They trained to attend to such situations. The footage taken from the body camera worn by one of the officers shows how they saved the poor dog.
The dog was seen panting while hiding on the shades underneath the steering wheel. It is an indication that the temperature slowly caused distress to the dog.
Some of the police officers tried to distract the dog while working on how they will break the back window of the car. They do not want to risk the chance of the dog getting injured.
The window broke after three hits of a police baton. An officer then unlocked the door, and they were finally able to safely get the dog out of the car.
In a report from the police department, they assessed the car’s temperature was about 115 degrees Fahrenheit causing the dog to be in distress. It is really in good fortune that someone noticed the dog and immediately called 911. The dog is now doing good and was given attention.
The dog’s owner, on the other hand, was sanctioned with two civil citations by the Animal Services Department.
This incident serves as a reminder to other dog owners to never leave their dog locked inside their car and be responsible pet owners.
