No one knows us better than our dogs. They spend most of their time by our side to tell when anything is amiss in a heartbeat. In several instances, a dog’s quick thinking has saved its owners’ lives.
Sandy, a rescue dog, is one of several young dogs who can think swiftly under duress. Sandy’s 88-year-old mother, Gwendola Johnson, fell outside her home and fought to get up. If it hadn’t been for Sandy, she might not have received the assistance she needed.
Kirk White of Glendale Integrated Waste Management always stopped by Johnson’s house during his trash collection route. Kirk White was used to watching Sandy from the window, so when the dog ran outside, White knew something was wrong.
Johnson’s house was perched atop a steep incline. So, from where she stood, she could see White, but he couldn’t see her. As a result, she turned to Sandy and told him to get help. Sandy, as expected, understood just what to do.
Sandy dashed down to White and attempted to call his attention. Fortunately, White recognized that the dog was alone outside and followed him back to the house. He immediately noticed Johnson on the ground. She’d been there for approximately an hour and a half.
Johnson was pulled back to her feet by White. He also double-checked for injuries, and she appeared to be in good shape.
Sandy saved his human’s life that day, but he wasn’t the only one. White was wise enough to recognize that something was awry, and he could sense that Sandy was warning him. Johnson’s granddaughter, Cheryl Malvar, expressed her admiration for White’s handling of the matter.
On the other hand, White confessed that he was only doing what any decent human would have done. His statements ring true to the core. Humans should always do the right thing, but this does not always happen. Dogs, on the other hand, will always remain faithful.
Johnson adopted Sandy during the dog’s most challenging time, and now Sandy is just returning the favor. A little sympathy, whether from a person or a pet, may go a long way.
