In 2020, this dog named Ory joined the Willard School’s special education department with three other dogs. She works as a service dog that helps students cope with their school problems. According to the school, Ory is good at what she does and became an integral part of the academe.
But recently, the young dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, torn ACLs in both knees, and degenerative hips. Before these illnesses manifested, Ory was fresh from an ectopic ureter surgery to address the issue in her urinary tract. She has not fully healed when the three other diseases manifested.
With the dog’s condition, she needs to undergo three surgeries to fix her knees and hips. Since the dog is a valuable asset of the community, the Willard School recently launched a GoFundMe initiative to raise funds. The school will use the money to finance the dog’s hospitalization costs. It is a long shot but the community is hopeful that Ory would get the treatment she needs.
The group’s goal is to raise at least $20,000, and they are halfway to this goal after they received $10,000 from generous donors. The staff and students of Willard School are instrumental to this undertaking, which they named “Pennies for Paws.”
Jess Jones, the school’s Ed Tech teacher, put up the GoFundMe page for Ory. He wrote that the consecutive surgeries for Ory would give him a quality life in the future. Jess likewise mentioned that the surgery would seek to provide Ory more years of meaningful service in the school.
Although saddened by this development, the staff and students keep their hopes high that Ory would survive this ordeal. Teacher Christen Surratt is among the many people who hope that Ory’s health will get better soon. According to the teacher, the dog is a fighter, so she knows Ory will overcome whatever will happen in the coming days.
